Brachycephalic Breeds and Summer Safety in Florida

Pug with Tongue Out Laying Outside with Fall Trees

From Dr. Rivas

If you share your life with a French Bulldog, English Bulldog, Pug, Shih Tzu, Boxer, or any short nosed breed, summer in Florida requires extra awareness.

These dogs are incredibly loving, expressive, and loyal. They are also anatomically different. Their shorter airways make it harder for them to move air efficiently, especially in heat and humidity. And here in Florida, humidity is often the bigger problem.

When it feels warm to you, it can feel overwhelming to them.

Why Summer Is Higher Risk

Brachycephalic dogs already work harder to breathe. Add high temperatures, heavy humidity, excitement, or physical activity, and their ability to cool themselves becomes compromised quickly.

Heatstroke in these breeds can happen faster and at lower temperatures than many owners expect.

Signs to Watch For

  • Excessive or louder than usual panting
  • Increased snorting or airway noise
  • Gums becoming bright red or pale
  • Lethargy
  • Vomiting
  • Weakness or collapse

If you see these signs, seek veterinary care immediately. Heatstroke is an emergency.

How I Recommend Protecting Them

  • Walk only early in the morning or after sunset
  • Keep walks short and low intensity
  • Wet the belly and paws with cool water before going outside
  • Avoid hot pavement completely
  • Always carry water
  • Never leave them outside unattended in summer heat

Even backyard time should be supervised. Many heat emergencies happen at home.

Water and Outdoor Activities

Not all brachycephalic dogs are strong swimmers. Their body structure and airway anatomy can make swimming more challenging.

If your dog is near a pool, beach, or on a boat, a properly fitted life vest is essential. Supervision is critical. Fatigue happens quickly in heat.

Storms and Emotional Wellbeing

Many short nosed breeds are also more prone to anxiety. Summer storms can increase respiratory effort due to stress.

In our Fear Free approach, we prioritize emotional safety as much as physical safety. Preparing a calm, predictable environment during storms can reduce stress and protect their breathing.

When in Doubt, Ask

If you are unsure whether your dog is at increased risk, or if you have noticed louder breathing, exercise intolerance, or heat sensitivity, summer is a good time for an airway and wellness evaluation.

At Weston Road Animal Hospital our commitment as the first Fear Free hospital in Broward county is to protect both the physical and emotional wellbeing of your pet.

Brachycephalic dogs can absolutely enjoy summer. They just need thoughtful management and proactive care.

If you ever have questions about your dog’s summer safety plan, we are here to help.
